1791 Decorated Berks County Dower Chest - Lot #: 102

Poplar with pine secondary in original polychrome painted finish on top, sides and front, scroll cut bracket base, three overlapping drawers with original brass bat wing back plates and bale handles. Painting in two arch top panels with vases of flowers on lid and front with painted columns flanking and white painted inscription along top front "Ely Boffington 1791", sides with compass star and vining flowers, wonderfully complicated wrought iron lock on interior of chest, and lidded till, lid with thumb molded breadboard end and edge, hand wrought iron strap hinges with spade terminals, attached with rose-head rivets, 49 x 22 x 29" high. Old Sotheby's New York label.
Condition: Paint on sides and front is circa 98%, on lid circa 40% but designs are still clear. Two replaced brasses.
