Folk Art Carved Holder - Lot #: 096

Chip carved hanging spill box with whaling scenes on each side and pinwheels and heart on the bow front in old polished finish. Circa 1830's. From the Barbara Johnson collection. Wood appears to be some type of mahogany, 2.2" wide x 1.75" deep x 10" long. Barbara Johnson, née Piasecka (1937-2013) was a philanthropist, art collector, and heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune through her late husband John Seward Johnson I (1895-1983). Barbara Johnson studied art history at Wroclaw University in her native Poland. She is best know in the antique world for her amazing collection of art, antiques, and memorabilia related to whaling. Johnson’s whaling collection included books, manuscripts, documents, paintings, prints, whaling tools, nautical and navigational equipment, marine antiques, & scrimshaw.
