Elijah Pierce Folk Art Carving Plus
Lot of two including a relief carved and polychrome painted folk art carving of a Saint with hawk and sheep, signed "E. Pierce on back. African American Columbus, Ohio folk art carver circa 1930's, 5.75" x 5.5" high; and an 18th century cut-out back plate of a hanging box with original polychrome painted portrait of a gentleman with geometric surround, 7.5" high. Elijah Pierce (1892-1948) was born the youngest son of a former slave on a Mississippi farm in 1892. He began carving at an early age when his father gave him his first pocketknife. By age seven, Elijah Pierce began carving little wooden farm animals. As a child, Pierce loved to go out into the woods by the creek bank with his dog to fish and to whittle animals or other small figurines from wood scraps he’d find on the forest floor. He left the south and married a gal from Columbus, Ohio where he worked as a barber.

Painted Decoration, two piece in white pine with original grain painted finish and interior with original white painted finish. Horizontally fluted crown molding in original dark green painted finish, as is the half round trim, mullions and fluted raised panels on lower doors. Two glass doors with six lights & tombstone tops over two overlapping dovetailed drawers with original brass oval back plates, bale handles & escutcheon over two doors. Scroll cut bracket base with three feet in front. Interior top has grooved plate rails on all three shelves and flatware cut-outs on front edge of upper two shelves. Lower with two shelves. Unusual construction with dovetailed top and base boards and all shelves morticed through back in six places; 52 x 25 x 80" high. When this piece of furniture last sold at Christie's in the 1983 it set the world record price for a piece of paint decorated furniture.

There is an attached typed label to the underside of this chair reading "The Little Windsor Chair. This chair, one of eight was owned by Captain George Little U.S.N., and used by him on the Frigate "Boston" in about the year 1800, and then taken by him to his (home) farm at Marshfield, Mass. His son, Edward Preble Little, my great-grandfather, inherited the old farm, living there until 1854. Sold farm and divided the furniture among his children. My grandmother received this one. It came to my father. 1892." George Little (1754-1809) was a United States Navy officer. He served in the Massachusetts State Navy during the American Revolutionary War and in the U.S. Navy during the Quasi-War with France.

Portrait of a Young Boy by C.T. Webber
oil on canvas, circa 1870, half length portrait, 20 x 22" in gilt frame, 28.5 x 32.5". The signature was in the lower right corner but was removed during cleaning with typed note from restorer included. Charles T. Webber (1825-1911) apparently never studied at an art school. By 1855 he was painting portraits and teaching in Springfield, Ohio. Webber found employment in 1858 tinting photographs in Cincinnati, and soon afterwards he and two artists opened the Artists’ Photographic and Picture Gallery. When the Civil War broke out, he moved into his own studio where he continued to paint portraits, but also started creating mythological and historical works. Webber became well known in Cincinnati and exhibited his work in the first Cincinnati Industrial Exposition of 1870 to exhibit his art, which won him a silver medal.
Condition: Canvas mounted to board, adhesive problems, heavy restoration, repair to right shoulder, inpaint to background, heavy varnish. Old restoration shows with black light.

North, Mrs. Sally S/Garge Age 39 years 1833" The artists work is discussed and illustrated in "American Folk Painting" by Mary Black, 1966, pg 73. Noah North (1809-1880) was Born in Alexander, New York, Noah North was a itinerant portraitist whose art career appears to only span the 1830's in the areas of Alexander, Holley, & Rochester, New York. He also journeyed into Ohio where several of his portraits have turned up of locals from that area. He may also have traveled as far as Cincinnati and Kentucky. No signed portraits from Noah North have yet been identified from the 1840s. One notable feature of his female portraits is the detail he took in painting their lace bonnets. A portrait remarkable similar to this one is illustrated in Barbara W. Sarudy's blog on this artist. EXCELLENT CONDITION, NO INPAINTING!

a circa 1880's folk art toy horse and cart. The horse is a typical Victorian fabric covered  stuffed toy with wood legs and muzzle, with leather ears and harness. While the two wheeled cart is whale bone with wrought iron shafts, 13 x 5 x 8" high. From the Barbara Johnson Collection. Barbara Johnson, née Piasecka (1937-2013) was a philanthropist, art collector, and heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune through her late husband John Seward Johnson I (1895-1983). Barbara Johnson studied art history at Wroclaw University in her native Poland. She is best know in the antique world for her amazing collection of art, antiques, and memorabilia related to whaling. Johnson’s whaling collection included books, manuscripts, documents, paintings, prints, whaling tools, nautical and navigational equipment, marine antiques, & scrimshaw.

circa 1820-40 "D" form with hinged lid and three lower drawers, scrimshaw vignette scenes on front of "St. Paul's Church"; "St. Peters Church" and American Lighthouse with side-wheel steamship and three mast  whaler flying an American flag, plus weather vane with whale wind directional,. The decoration is engraved in typical scrimshaw fashion and tiny brass nails are added as accent, stylized floral and geometric borders, four  turned whale bone legs, faceted whale bone drawer knobs. Top with turned maple thread spool holder and pin cushion, 10.25" wide x 5" deep x 10" high. We believe that this piece was purchased at one of the auctions of the Barbara Johnson Whaling/Scrimshaw collection. Outstanding Folk Art Mechanical Toy
hand carved and painted in original polychrome and varnish finish, untouched. This toy has a carved wooden figure of a man with board in right hand and jointed arms and a dog house in which is the carved and painted figure of a open mouthed running dog. when the lever along right side is pulled the dog comes out of the house in attach mode with mouth opening and closing and the man raises his arms with stick in it. Circa 1900-20. There are a series of brass pins set along right side of the inside of the house and when dog moves forward a noise maker is engaged by these pins in imitation of the dogs bark; 6.25 wide x 31.25" long x 9.5" high.
Condition: The string which operated the mans arms and dogs mouth has broken and so it is in need of restringing, else Excellent.
